What Is Piano Restoration?

Restoration is the process of returning a piano to its original condition — tonally, mechanically, and aesthetically. It is distinct from simple tuning or regulation, and represents a far more comprehensive intervention. A full restoration may involve replacing the strings and tuning pins, rebuilding the action with new hammers and dampers, reconditioning or replacing the soundboard, and refinishing the cabinet. When carried out by an expert, the result is an instrument that plays and sounds as it did when it left the factory.

Assessment: The Starting Point

Every restoration begins with a thorough assessment of the piano's condition.
